My two passions in the Arts are Stone Carving and Digital Imagery.I received a BFA in Sculpture and a MFA in Multimedia and have shown and exhibited in each of these two fields. Since moving to Virginia, i've really focused on stonecarving artistically while relying on my digital skills to pay the bills as an Art Director in town. With Stone carving, there is the absolute thrill of discovering something inside the stone that inspires me. Each piece of stone has unlimited potential and there is nothing more satisfying than taking an idea and transforming it into a sculpture. Stone carving is a beautiful, lengthy relationship between the artist and a piece of stone. The best carvings are the ones where you meet your stone half way, where your Will and the stones Will are both present.
I work mostly in marble and alabaster. Marble is my first love. I like the challenge of its strength and it's durability in the outside elements. Once a piece is outside, size is not an obstacle. I prefer larger pieces to small but have learned to resist the temptation to make things as big as possible. I love both figurative and abstract work but am presently doing mostly figurative. There is more of a storytelling element in figurative that I am drawn too. Storytelling is a big part of my work. The figures actions are what tells the story and compels the viewer.
My stone sculpture has shown throughout the south including Georgia, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Virgina. I am a founding member of the Virginia Stone Carvers Guild and we have maintained a growing group for four years. I presently teach stone carving Spring and Fall sessions of Albermarle County Open Doors Community Education classes. Teaching now for three years has giving me the biggest thrill of seeing students discover stone carving for the first time. I am also very excited to have been accepted as an associate member of the McGuffey Arts Center in June 2006.
